Supreme Court issues major stray dog relocation order

In a landmark directive aimed at addressing the stray dog population in the Delhi-NCR region, the Supreme Court has ordered that all stray dogs be moved to registered shelter homes. The decision, which follows months of deliberation, comes after multiple complaints from residents and municipal authorities about rising dog attacks and public safety concerns. The Court emphasized that the move should be humane, with veterinary care and proper living conditions ensured.

Municipal bodies to coordinate with animal welfare groups

To execute the order, the Court instructed municipal corporations and councils to work closely with recognized animal welfare organizations. This partnership will help ensure a smooth transition for the dogs, while also providing the necessary vaccination, sterilization, and microchipping to prevent further uncontrolled breeding. The Court noted that a detailed execution plan should be presented within two weeks.

Balancing safety with animal rights in urban areas

While the order aims to address safety concerns, it also reflects the Court’s sensitivity toward animal rights. The judgment stressed that relocation should not be viewed as eradication, and that adequate funding and oversight will be critical. Animal rights activists have welcomed the decision but cautioned that implementation will be key to preventing cruelty and neglect.
