What is Black Fungus or Mucormycosis?

The Black fungus cases among Covid patients are on the rise in Bengaluru and the top agency of the region BMCRI has begun research. It is reported that Black fungus, or mucormycosis, often manifests in the skin and also affects the lungs and the brain. Mucormycosis is a critical fungal infection that is caused by a group of molds known as mucormycetes, according to the US CDC.

IT can also lead to blackening or discolouration over the nose, blurred or double vision, chest pain, breathing difficulties and coughing blood. As per reports the infection is said to be so severe that patients eyes have to be removed in order to keep them alive.

• Monitor blood glucose level post Covid-19 recovery
• Use steroids only under medical advice
• Use sterilized water for humidifiers during O2 therapy
• Use antibiotics and anti-fungal medicines cautiously
• Do not avoid dark coloring on the bridge of the nose asas bacterial sinusitis

Health Ministry advisory on Mucormycosis

Health Ministry has issued advisory amidst rising numbers of ‘black fungus’ infections in India. The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to issue an advisory saying “Mucormycosis, if uncared for, may turn fatal. Sinuses or lungs of such individuals get affected after fungal spores are inhaled from the air.” A patient needs to be cautious about their health for at least 2 weeks post getting recovered from coronavirus in order to prevent the infection of black fungus. Mucormycosis is a deadly fungal infection found in some Covid-19 patients with uncontrolled diabetes and prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay.
