Older people who don’t get enough deep sleep have higher amounts of brain protein Tau, a signal of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study.

People Should Have Deep Sleep

The researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in the US reportedly said that slow- wave sleep is the deep sleep people require to build up memories and get up feeling refreshed.

Bad Quality Sleep – A Warning Sign

Published in the Journal Science Translational Medicine, findings of the study suggest bad quality sleep in later stages of life could be a warning sign for declining brain health.

More Tau Protein Induces Decreased Sleep

Brenden Lucey, an assistant professor at the Washington University stated that they found an inverse relationship between decreased slow-wave sleep and more Tau protein in people who were either mentally normal or very mildly damaged, indicating that reduced slow-wave activity may be a marker for the transition between normal and disabled.
