Kisan Kranti Padyatra: Police use tear gas, water cannons to stop protesting farmers

The protesting members of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) are coming to the capital as part of their “Kisan Kranti Padyatra” with several demands including loan waiver, friendly crop insurance, subsidised electricity and fuel and to implement recommendations of the Swaminathan commission.

Police are using tear gas and water cannons as thousands of farmers reached the National Capital. The farmers are at least 30,000 in number, who have walked or travelled in tractors from Uttar Pradesh have been stopped at the heavily obstructed Delhi-UP border. But the angry farmers tried to break the barriers that forced the police to use batons and tear gas shells. In the process, several protestors got injured.

Demands Of Farmers

Their representatives are currently meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Section 144 Imposed In Several Areas Of Delhi

The police had  imposed an injunction for one week on Monday in east and north-east Delhi anticipating trouble. In east Delhi, Deputy Commissioner (East) Pankaj Singh issued the order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which will remain effective till October 8.
