Narayanan fights legal battle since 1994
Narayanan, a former ISRO scientist who was acquitted in the 1994 spy case, was fighting a legal battle since then to clear his name from the allegations and seeking compensation. By arresting Narayanan and another ISRO scientist D Sasikumaran, on espionage charges, The police claimed that Narayanan and Sasikumaran had transferred secret documents, to Pakistan.
The case was then handled over to the CBI within 20 days of its registration. After the investigation, the CBI had said that these charges are false. Narayanan was declared innocent after the CBI’s closure report was accepted by a Kochi court in 1996. After this in the same year, the then State Government ordered a re-enquiry which was overruled by the Supreme Court in 1998.
At the same time, Narayanan moved the National Human Rights Commission, asking for a compensation of Rs 1 crore. The NHRC ordered for a provisional compensation of Rs 10 lakh, which was approved by the Kerala High Court in 2012. In the year 2015, Narayanan moved to the Supreme Court seeking criminal and disciplinary action against Kerala police officials led by Siby Mathew.
