Indian Air Force proposes to buy 83 new Tejas fighter aircrafts from HAL. The Rs50,000 crore 83 Tejas fighters would be supplied to the IAF by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

It has a top speed of 2,205 km/h and a range of 3,000 km. One unit of Tajas costs around 31,000,000–31,090,000 USD (2009) and Indian Air Force is the primary user of the aircraft. It has Turbofan, General Electric F404 engines.

The Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multirole light fighter Tejas or Radiant in Sanskrit was designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The light combat aircraft was made specifically for the needs of Indian Air Force and Navy. Due to its tail-less compound delta-wing configuration, the Tejas has a high maneuverability in mid air which makes it one of the best light combat aircraft.

It was built under a project which started in 1980s and the project aimed at replacing the MiG-21 fighters which have become aged and needed to be replaced by a newer model and more efficient aircraft. This light combat aircraft got christened as Tejas in the year 2003 when it was official named. Tejas means Radiant in Sanskrit.
