The All India Council for Technical Education AICTE would be decreasing the number of seats for engineering courses by 80,000 this year and consequent to that as many as 200 engineering colleges would be shut down in the country.

Notably, there has been cut in the seats for students in the engineering streams in the past few years and several engineering colleges have already shut down in the nation. The latest move would also impact the scope of engineering colleges and it is learnt that engineering colleges have been opting more and fresh courses other than engineering in order to continue seeking the return on the investment that they have made.

On the other hand, experts believe that the move would be impacting “substandard” colleges, the smaller and lesser known colleges the most and the big and renowned colleges would continue to dominate the engineering stream offering different courses. Meanwhile, Odisha is said to have sought intervention from the centre on this issue.
