The Drug Controller of India has issued a public health warning on the anti-acidity drug Ranitidine. In a statement issued by the drug controller, it has been reportedly said that there are many chemicals found in the drug Ranitidine, which can cause a risk of cancer.
It is worth mentioning that the drug Ranitidine is not only used as antacid, but also in the treatment of many other diseases like intestinal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagitis. This drug is available in different formulations in the market in tablet and injection form. Some pharma companies sell both these drugs in 180 types.
Warning issued by Drug Controller of India
According to the reports, Directorate General of Health Services Drug Controller, VG Somani has issued a warning to all the states of the country regarding the issue related to Ranitidine medicine. States have been ordered to take action on this.
Notably, the probability that it might cause cancer was first detected by the FDA of America and an alert was issued in this regard.
Doctors advised not to prescribe this medicine
Companies producing this medicine in India have been asked to stop production of this medicine with immediate effect. According to the instructions of the Drug Controller, doctors have been advised not to prescribe this medicine to patients.
The Quality, Safety and Capacity-Quality Control Organization of India, The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, has reportedly referred the matter related to Ranitidine to an expert committee. This committee will investigate the Ranitidine drug issue.
