Unicef arranged for the drone to be travelled around 40km across uneven mountains in Vanuatu to deliver a vaccine and with this a baby on the small Pacific island has become the first person who has been given a vaccine supplied by a commercial drone.
Since the supply is very difficult, about 20% children are not able to get important vaccinations. The UN children’s organization now hopes that delivery through drones will be of vital importance in future in isolated regions.
Earlier, the drones have been used to deliver medicines. Reportedly, Unicef says it was the first time ever globally when a country had made a contract with a commercial drone company to supply vaccines to remote regions. Two companies were in competition for the project on Vanuatu and finally an Australian Company Swoop Aero won the bid after successful trials.
