December 4, 2017: Congress vice president and soon to be party president Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination paper for the party’s top post on Monday. He was accompanied by some of the senior most Congress party leaders including Delhi’s former chief minister Sheila Dixit and former chief minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot among others.

The ruling BJP on the other hand has mocked the entire process of Congress’ party presidential election process. Meanwhile, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has also reportedly said that Congress party is electing Rahul Gandhi who is out on bail as party president.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on the other hand has said that Rahul is a darling of all the Congressmen including men and women and this seems to assert his approval of election of Rahul Gandhi as the next party president. He also said that Rahul Gandhi would take the party tradition forward.

Notably, Rahul’s elevation as party president is awaited for the past many months and there have been regular reports about him being elected as the party chief on one or the other occasion. But it seems that time has finally come for the Gandhi scion to take charge of party affairs and steer the party for 2019 general elections.

Political pundits also affirm that Rahul’s elevation as party prez would no doubt infuse a new life in Congress party which is reportedly losing its ground in most of the areas in the country. The most striking recent loss being Amethi in UP where a BJP candidate won the mayoral election. It was assumed that Amethi is a bastion of Congress but mayoral election have been an eye opener for Congress as how deep the BJP could impress people.
