NEW DELHI | Updated February 2, 2018: The deal between India and Sweden’s Armament Manufacturing Company AB Bofors for purchasing a total of 400 airwashers guns worth Rs 1437 crore in March 1986. The deal was signed between India and Sweden’s weapons manufacturer AB Bofors.

In the Bofors deal, the case involving Rs 64 crores has a new turn giving sleepless nights to many. About 13 years after the Delhi High Court acquitted all the accused, the CBI has now approached the Supreme Court in this case after 13 years. On February 2, the CBI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision.

Notably, the Delhi High Court has acquitted all the accused, including the Hindujas on May 31, 2005, in this case. This case came to light in 1987 and the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was also accused of being involved in it. It is reportedly learnt that the CBI has challenged the decision of the High Court on the advice of attorney general.

It is worth mentioning here that allegations of brokerage of 64 crore to buy Bofors gun from Sweden were engaged on the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, including the European merchant Hindujas. At that time there was a lot of ruckus in the political world. The deal between India and Swedish armament manufacturing company AB Bofors for purchasing a total of 400 airwashers guns worth Rs 1437 crore was done on 24 March 1986. Subsequently, it was claimed that the company had brokered high-profile politicians and defense officers in India to get this defense deal. Later the government had ordered the CBI to investigate it. The CBI had filed an FIR in this case on January 22, 1990. The CBI had made Bin Chadha and Hinduja brothers the main accused in the case.
