Aadhaar no longer mandatory to get new SIM, Centre issues directions to telecom companies
The central government has reportedly issued directions to all the telecom companies in the nation stating that Aadhaar verification or Aadhaar as an identity or address proof for the subscriber is not necessary and the new subscribers could also supply other identity or address verification documents for buying new SIM cards.

This means that Aadhaar card is no longer mandatory for new subscribers to get new SIM. Meanwhile, the process of updation of Aadhaar number with mobile subscribers is already underway and its deadline is July 31, 2018.
