Super Moon Glorifies Sky

The full moon looked bigger and brighter than usual on the night of February 19 that triggered shutterbugs to aim skyward. Reportedly, astronomers said it was a super moon when it had moved into a position nearest to the earth during it’s orbit.

Moon Appeared 14% Bigger And 30% Brighter

Debiprosad Duari, Director of MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research at MP Birla Planetarium reportedly said that the moon appeared 14% bigger and 30% brighter because of it’s proximity to the earth. He added that the moon at the time of it’s elliptical orbit around the earth is closest at a point of time while farthest at another.

Average Distance Between Earth & Moon- 3.84 Lakh Km

At the time, when it is closest to the earth, it is called perigee and when it is farthest, it is called apogee. He explained that the average distance between the earth and the moon is 3.84 lakh km. During apogee, it increases to 4.05 lakh km and during pedigee, it reduces to 3.56 lakh km.
