Crackers after all, are a sign of a deeper feeling, and possibly there are other different ways of expressing these. But we can always do our bit in protecting the environment and millions of child labourers who allegedly make fire crackers.

Diwali, is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. A festival where families come together to celebrate and burning crackers is the highlight of this occasion. But due to the increase in environmental pollution, Government took this issue seriously and enacted various legislations and the Supreme Court gave the judgement to ban crackers in order to reduce this increasing level of pollution. Now the question is Will there be any impact of Ban on fireworks on Diwali celebrations?

Supreme Court’s decision to ban fireworks

With the use of various types of crackers, the pollution level becomes extremely high which makes the air unbreathable and noise levels intolerable. Research says, fire-crackers increase the sulphur dioxide level 200-fold above the safety limits prescribed by World Health Organisation (WHO). The pollution can lead to various health diseases. Every year, many cases are reported in the national capital of India, Delhi related to burn injuries and cases related to wheezing, respiratory diseases, exacerbation of bronchial asthma. The Government took this issue seriously and enacted various legislations and the Supreme Court gave certain judgements and orders to reduce the increasing level of pollution.

A Diwali without crackers

A cracker-less Diwali seems strange because a general idea of  Public celebrations mean crowds, noise, traffic, disturbance.  But pollution caused by crackers has reached a stage where it has become a genuine health hazard.  Diwali night is a significant and very visible trigger for respiratory problems. This is a reality experienced by all of us. The Campaigns are going on in schools against firecrackers that has shown some results, and the awareness of the health problems caused by pollution is rising rapidly. It is clear that the level of pollution caused by crackers generated is not sustainable, and with growing environmental and health consciousness, this cultural practice will need to be modified significantly in the coming years.

  • Make sweets: Spend more time in enjoying the other traditions of this festival like preparing sweets.
  • Meet family and friends: Spend this Diwali by getting together with your near and dear ones.

These alternative ideas will help you to enjoy Diwali in a way you are comfortable with.
