Justice Ranjan Gogoi was administered the oath of Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind

Justice Ranjan Gogoion Wednesday took oath as the Chief Justice of India after the retirement of his predecessor Justice Dipak Misra on Monday. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Justice during a brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cabinet ministers, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and HD Deve Gowda were present for the ceremony.

Will Have A Tenure Of 13 Months

Justice Gogoi will have a tenure of around 13 months, and will retire on November 17, 2019. He is the first person from the North-eastern states to become the Chief Justice of India.

Elevated To The Supreme Court In 2012

Born on November 18, 1954, Justice Gogoi was enrolled at the Bar in 1978 at the Gauhati High Court. In the year 2001, he was appointed as the Permanent Judge in Gauhati High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012 from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he was Chief Justice for more than one year.

His Plan To Tackle The Pending Cases

The Chief Justice had earlier said that he has a plan to combat the problem of high number of pending cases in Indian Courts. He mentioned that pendency of cases has the potential to make the judicial system irrelevant.
