Mumbai: Sep 29, 2017:
Many people (exact number still unknown but 15 were confirmed dead) are dead while 40 other were injured in a stampede at a foot overbridge that connects Elphinstone station with Parel station.
The incident occurred during morning rush hours on the bridge when a person lost control and slipped on the steps.
Others who tried to help him also slipped which soon resulted in a stampede on the bridge.
The injured were rushed to the nearest hospital and were undergoing treatment.
Piyush Goyal, railway minister reached the station after the incident and ordered necessary help to the injured and a high level enquiry.
PM Narendra Modi in a tweet also expressed condolence.
Notably, the station over bridge was cramped and people have been complaining about insufficient space for a lot of commuters during the peek hours but the authorities have allegedly given a deaf ear to all such complaints.
