Bird Race & Awareness event – 3rd Jaipur Bird Race Event highlights details

  • The 3rd Jaipur BirdRace was held on Sunday 21.1.2018)
  • It was a Best chance for bird watchers to enjoy birds … and learn from their ways
  • Bird watchers and enthusiasts had a rendezvous with the featherfolk.
  • The current season was part of the (December 2017 – March 2018), session and the organisers propose to hold such events in 16 cities across India
  • The Next Bird Race will be held on January 28 in Coimbatore

JAIPUR/JODHPUR | Updated January 21, 2018: The India BirdRaces conceptualized naturalist-writer Sunjoy Monga was held in Jaipur and it remained a heaven for bird watchers who truly enjoyed watching birds in their natural habitat.

Seldom do urbanites happen to have a chance of going close to nature and watch the natural birds and animals in their natural environment. For urban people the birds, animals are restricted to zoo and at the most to sanctuaries.

The Bird Race event held in Jaipur was participated by hundreds of enthusiasts and bird watchers from Jaipur and across the state and from the country. With such huge participation from people, the birding event could be the greatest birding event in the entire world.

Participants were divided into teams which chased birds from dawn to dusk and captured the birds in their natural habitat.

Truly the avifauna (birdlife) came to life again for the urbanites through these Indian BirdRaces. The event not only helped in bird-watching but it also started a better understanding of other aspects of our biodiversity and immediate environment so that support and awareness for the cause can be increased.

The Experts related to conservation of birds had a in-depth discussion on the problems related with Chandlai Wetland and its importance for the Conservation of birds.
DCF Ms Sonal Joharihar (DCF North Jaipur) who has Chandlai Wetland in her jurisdiction, rendered support to the efforts of the organisers team for this Wetland.
A detailed report will be submitted to CWLW Dr GV Reddy and DCF Ms Sonal Joharihar for further action plan.

The third such event was held in Jaipur on Sunday and participants enthusiastically witnessed hundreds of species of birds in and around the Pink City Jaipur.

It was a race to spot, chase and identify as many birds as the participants could during the day. There were no winners or losers as everybody every participant was a winner as he or she has helped in increasing awareness about birds  .

As there were no pre-determined routes for the BirdRace – the participants were allowed to spot and watch birds in multiple locations all within 25 – 30 km radius of the city. The participants recorded as many species of birds as they could and learnt about the species from the experts & the experienced. In the evening, the teams me at the venue over dinner and an interacted tête-à-tête..

Over the years, the India BirdRaces have recorded nearly 20 additional species or new records of birds for several cities.

In the evening get-together, bird watcher participants had an opportunity to interact with the finest and most experienced birders in that city, including special invitees.

The evening event was organised at Hotel Om Vilas, Bani Park, Jaipur, wherein the teams who spent whole day birding shared their experiences, problems noted by them and a final tally of birds was prepared and it would be shared with State forest department and State tourism department for promoting conservation and bird tourism in Jaipur.

With the initiative, Chandlai Lake has emerged as an Important Birding Area in the region.

The Local Organisers of bird Race Jaipur Dr. Amit Kotia, who is Assistant Professor at Botany Department of University of Rajasthan and Dr Sumit Dookia and Dr. Himmat Singh are the Coordinators for Rajasthan BirdRaces made the event a success.
